Institute for a Secure and Sustainable Environment

ISSE Staff > Ungtae Kim

Dr. Ungtae Kim is an ISSE post-doctoral research associate and a research assistant professor in UT's Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering. Dr. Ungtae Kim currently works on the SERDP (Strategic Environmental Research and Development Program) project with Dr. Jack Parker, a research professor in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering.

Before joining the University of Tennessee, Dr. Kim was a research associate in the Utah Water Resources Laboratory, where he finished his PhD degree with a dissertation titled “Regional Impacts of Climate Change on Water Resources of the Upper Blue Nile River Basin, Ethiopia.” He completed his MS degree at Korea University in 1999, and then worked in the Water Resources Division of the Korea Institute of Construction Technology (KICT) for four years. Dr. Kim has been a registered professional engineer (PE) of water resources engineering in Korea since 2001. He also served as a military engineer for the Korean Army from 1992 to 1994.

Dr. Kim’s research area covers various aspects of hydrology and water resources, including stochastic and deterministic hydrologic modeling, model evaluation, drought and flood analysis, subsurface hydrology, contaminant transport in groundwater, and climate change impacts on water resources. Dr. Kim has both theoretical and practical sense in solving real world water problems through more than 10 years of experience in the academic, research, and consultation sectors. He is particularly skilled at manipulating large data sets and using advanced computing techniques. He currently serves as a reviewer for the Journal of Hydrologic Engineering of the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE), the Journal of American Water Resources Association (JAWRA), and the Journal of Korean Society of Civil Engineers (KSCE).
