Ph.D., Mechanical Engineering (Thermodynamics), Virginia Tech
M.S., Mechanical Engineering (Thermodynamics), University of Tennessee
B.S., Mechanical Engineering, University of Tennessee
Dr. Harrell's primary activities center on providing technical assistance and engineering support services to industry worldwide. This work focuses on applied thermodynamics and takes the form of industrial process energy assessments, specific process assessments, individual component analysis, and short course presentations. The main emphasis of his work is industrial energy management and applied thermodynamics in the areas of boilers, steam systems, combined heat and power systems (cogeneration), compressed air systems, and refrigeration systems.
Dr. Harrell has also taught both classic engineering thermo-dynamics and applied thermodynamics to graduate and undergraduate students in UT's Mechanical Engineering Department.
Dr. Harrell has traveled extensively and provided services to a large industry base worldwide. He has completed projects in 17 countries on six continents and in 28 of the United States. He has completed process energy assessments in many industrial settings, including oil refineries, gas refineries, paper mills, steel mills, aluminum mills, petrochemical facilities, food processing plants, ship yards, textile mills, and fiber production facilities, among others.
Outside the office, Dr. Harrell enjoys family activities with his wife and two children. Favorite activities include backpacking, camping, and fly fishing.
